Would you like to work at a college or university? Whether you’re a teacher, custodian or a parking administrator, a site called HigherEdJobs might have just the job lead for you.
What is HigherEdJobs?
HigherEdJobs is a free job search site that specifically targets positions at colleges and universities. However these are not just teaching positions. The site posts openings for faculty, executive leadership, administration and non-academic support services.
For instance, you can find jobs here for administrative assistants, maintenance and food service workers, as well as for school deans, professors and part-time adjunct lecturers. Indeed, because schools are often as large and complex as small cities — involving housing, meals, social services, recreation, in addition to academics — the breadth and range of positions available here is vast.
How it works
The site is neatly organized to serve job seekers, no matter how they prefer to search. You can look for open jobs by geography, position, or specific school. Or you can search based on other criteria, such as working remotely or part-time.
There is no need to register. However, if you do, the site will email you when newly advertised jobs meet your search criteria.
HigherEdJobs review
There are many valuable and free job boards available to job seekers, including Indeed and Glassdoor. However, HigherEdJobs’ unique niche — and beautiful organization — make this site stand out for anyone who thinks they might want to take any position at a college or university.
While the site’s name may indicate that this is primarily a place to seek employment as an educator or Dean, the site actually provides opportunities for a far broader population. In fact, the site also advertises positions for maintenance personnel, food service workers, gardeners, administrative assistants and part-time enrollment advisors. We even found a $40 per hour driving job that involved chauffeuring around the president of a Massachusetts-based university.
But, of course, there are also teaching positions, leadership jobs, positions in accounting, technology, marketing, development and housing. As a result, we see this as a site to consider if you are looking for almost any type of job when you live near a college or university.
The process
There are many ways to search for job leads here, including just plugging in the type of position you’re looking for and your geographic area.
However, the site also encourages job seekers to post a resume so that prospective employers can find you. You can also register on the site to get emails whenever a new job listing matches your criteria.
Applying
However, like most job boards, whether or not you get any given job is not up to HigherEdJobs. This site simply links you to the schools seeking workers. It does not provide work itself.
Consequently, when you click through a job listing, you’ll be sent directly to the institution that is hiring. Each institution is likely to have different application requirements and processes for processing resumes.
One shortcoming
The only complaint we see about this site is that the job listings are sometimes stale, having been originally posted years ago. However, when we tested the site we found that the apparently stale listings were for positions that were constantly being re-filled. Like any job board, some positions that are advertised here are likely to be filled by the time you apply. But we didn’t find stale listings to be a significant problem.
